DETROIT NEWS:

-- There's really no pre-game confirmation on any changes. But it's probably a good bet that Howard starts and that May comes in for Maltby. Kindl will come out if Rafalski can go.

-- Detroit has recently dominated New York, 10-1 since 1999.

NEW YORK NEWS:

-- Henrik Lundqvist has never beaten Detroit.

-- Wade Redden, Brandon Dubinsky, and Donald Brashear are all out with injuries.

-- Marian Gaborik is ridiculously good this season.

-- Rangers have a lot of new faces this season, and they keep changing. They just picked Erik Christensen off waivers from Anaheim. They waived he-man sized goaltender Stephen Valliquette and sent him to the AHL, and called up Chad Ochocin.. er, Johnson, who was one of the best collegiate goalies over the past few seasons.

Projected lines:

Vinny Prospal | Artem Anisimov | Marian Gaborik
Sean Avery | Chris Drury | Ryan Callahan
Chris Higgins | Erik Christensen | Ales Kotalik
Enver Lisin | Brian Boyle | P-A Parenteau

Marc Staal | Michael Roszival
Michael Del Zotto | Daniel Girardi
Ilkka Heikkenen | Matt Gilroy

Henrik Lundqvist
Chad Johnson

Spotlight on...

Artem Anisimov -- This is a deep year for Ranger rookies, and Anisimov leads the charge up front. He was drafted in the 2nd round, 2006 as a big skilled Russian in the middle of all the questions about whether or not Russian players will keep coming to North America. Well, Anisimov did, and really raised his stock as a prospect with 81 points in 80 games last season in the AHL. He scored a handful of great goals in the pre-season, like this one, and made the Rangers out of camp. He started the season on the third line, as he's also a really good defensive player, but due to injuries and slumps, finds himself centering the top line tonight.

Michael Del Zotto -- The Rangers have a ton of great young talent on the blueline, and nobody really expected Del Zotto, a 2008 first round pick, to be able to step in and contribute this quickly. He has, though, playing on the top powerplay unit with 17 points in 28 games so far. He was red hot in October, but really slowed down in November. Del Zotto was the 20th overall pick in 2008, out of Oshawa in the OHL. He averaged close to a point per game in three years in the OHL -- all of them with John Tavares, as they were even traded together from Oshawa to London. He always struck me as a no-defense type of player in the OHL, and while that's still his weakness, he's come a long way since my first viewings on him.

Matt Gilroy - A third rookie defenseman suiting up for the Rangers on a regular basis (Heikkenen is the third), Gilroy won the Hobey Baker last season as the top collegiate player. He had offers to come out of college as a junior, but stayed his senior season and won a national championship with Boston University. This past offseason he was the prize of what was a very deep group of free agent college players sought after by a number of NHL teams. There were said to be 20-25 NHL offers for him, and he chose New York's one-way contract. He played a very unique game in college, as a solid defensive player, but also somewhat of a rover when he had the puck, not at all afraid to take it all the way down the ice. He's been up and down so far this season, learning to play better positionally but still scoring four goals.

Love the Del Zotto kid. Rightfully so, they're big on him here in New York, and you hear an awful lot about him - especially when he was Rookie of the Month in October.

They even toss around the novel idea that a defenseman could win the Calder, seemingly forgetting that their own Brian Leetch did it.

Any new on Helm's foot? He did play the rest of the game but he never picked up his foot and was clearly slower and afraid to put all his weight on that one foot.

Did last night's game prove to anyone else that Jimmy has to be our #1 goalie the rest of the year? Ozzie has been awful and I'm sure its a combination of age, skill, and injury. For the last year and a half he hasn't been able to move left at all. That's why so many of his goals allowed are rebounds to his left. The shot that forced Stuart to make the save was an awful miss and no goalie in the NHL should miss on a slow slapshot from the top of the circle with no screen.

I really think Ozzie is hurt badly. After the first shootout goal Ozzie couldn't get up. He was twisted and it clearly hurt him to swing back around and to get up. I think he is really hurt and we should consider resting him for a month or so. I'd love to see Larsson play in 10 or so games pre-Olympic break to see what we can expect out of him for the future (when Ozzie retires). Osgood has 1 more year after this year and that should be it for him.

Finally, since Clearly broke his jaw I think this guy has never been the same. He was our #4 forward, behind Datsyuk, Z, and Franzen. Last year and this year he has been the weakest player on the second line. Leino has done more this year than Cleary. Truly, he has fallen way down behind Filppula, Holmstom, Bertuzzi, and Eaves in scoring chances this year. Can anyone point to the last game where he dominated like he did pre-injury? He used to be so good at scoring that he was the sniper on the 2nd PP and he could breakaway on a PK for a goal. He just looks lost, out of sync, and one step too slow. I loved Cleary as much as the next guy but he's not worth a 2.8 million cap hit through the 12-13 season. I think we need to consider moving him once our injured guys come back, so around the trade deadline.

Keith, I'm just not sure that Osgood's hurt. I don't even know what to say about him anymore. It's so frustrating that he plays so poorly in the regular season, but this is exactly what happened last year. People questioned him, and then he just turned it on. I have no reason to believe that he can't do that again. He could be hurting a little, but if it was really bad, there's no way Detroit would still throw him out there and risk something serious.

As for Cleary, I would disagree with the jaw injury theory. He was an animal in the playoffs last year, he scored like crazy. I don't see him as a dominant player, but I do see him as an opportunistic scorer who should be burying more of his chances.

To be certain, something's wrong. His -8 rating is even worse than Bertuzzi's. It doesn't paint the picture of the hard-working, two-way forward that we've gotten used to. I think he's just too comfortable. He made this team for his ability to hustle and provide energy. Then he got his big contract when he scored a couple goals. He's looking to score first and backcheck later, now. I don't know what it'll take, but somehow Babcock's got to get Cleary to start using his speed and tenacity again.

I guess we'll just have to disagree on Clearly but I think I have proof on the Ozzy injury.

If you have the tape (or can find it) look at Ozzie after he lets in the first goal in the shootout. On my 50 inch HD TV I could see that when he untwisted he grimaced. As a person who has multiple injuries due to sports I can tell you it wasn't a "damn it I let one in" grimace, it was a "holy shit that hurt" look. Besides the grimace, he couldn't get up! My sister played travel hockey as a goalie and I know when goalies can't pop up (which they somehow always do) it means they are hurting bad. Ozzie cannot extend his left leg and he's really slow moving left. Watch for that from now on. I guarantee something is wrong.
