I've got some very unbad news for you

They should come up with a word for that.

Eat your heart out, Mebdeech

Extremely spectacular news today from The Ansar. Too bad he (or almost certainly, his editor) still doesn't know the difference between Niklas and Nicklas.

Guess what? You'll never guess. There's a distinct chance that in the next ten or so days, Johan Franzen will be the only Red Wing injured. Well, because we're the unluckiest team ever, there will probably be some new injuries. But of the current players injured, there's a very distinct chance that Franzen will be the only one injured. Dig this:

  • Niklas Kronwall is set to return to the lineup tomorrow. Confirming speculation that I will be booking it back to my apartment after my class gets out at 7:40.
  • Jason "This is only significant because he's better on the powerplay than Derek Meech" Williams is looking at a Friday return against Nashville. (thanks to @thenewthomas for bringing to my attention that Meech will leave the lineup tomorrow for Kronwall).
  • So is Tomas Holmstrom, but based on the face that they also mentioned Sunday's game against Pittsburgh probably means no for Friday. But Wings fans aren't too picky anymore.
  • Franzen isn't in the immediate future but seems to be really set on returning before the Olympics. I don't care as long as he's 100% because I would hate nothing more than seeing him come back for two games and tweaking something when he could have an additional three weeks of rest.
  • Get this: I solved a mystery. For the past year or so, I've noticed that this guy named Andreas Lilja is listed on our roster. I just wasn't sure who he was. Apparently, he's been having some headaches. Mick dropped a huge bomb on Saturday that Lilja could return next week. Ken Holland gave him the old, "well, nothing's changed" and Wings fans chalked it up to Mick's in-game beverage habits. However, apparently what Ken Holland didn't say was that Lilja has been thirteen days without headaches, and doctors will clear him if he makes it fourteen days. Pray to your deity, sacrifice something, do whatever you can to make sure Lilja makes it through this last day. Don't make any annoying loud noises either, just in case. He works out like crazy and practices every day. Is 1-2 weeks an unreasonable time frame if he gets cleared by doctors?

Now the questions arise as to what Detroit can do to make room for this. They have 21 players on the active roster. Kronwall makes 22. Holmstrom and Williams makes 24, putting Detroit one over the limit. The easy solution is sending Justin Abdelkader down to the AHL, but he's 12th in the league in hits. He's looked very good at times, although a little shot of confidence (although Grand Rapids kinda sucks right now) from the AHL might help his offensive game. Other options include trading Derek Meech or Ville Leino or biting the bullet and sending Bray May down to the AHL. Doesn't seem like something Detroit would do, but the bottom line is Abdelkader is one of the team's best 12 forwards and at least needs to be in the playoff roster.

Thoughts? Scenarios? It's just so nice to get all this unbad news at once.

Abby is part of the future of the Wings, I'd like to see him stay up and keep getting NHL level development rather then fooling around in the AHL so one of the older (less skilled?) guys can stay on the roster. That doesn't take into account his 2-way contract as far as the ability to cover injuries later on, but can we -reeeeally- get as unlucky again this year as we did earlier in the season? All I know is that watching Helm (local nickname: RocketSkates) and Abby in the playoffs last year was impressive, and it can't hurt the wings to focus on our future stars.

The Griffins could really use Abdelkader right now, and he could use the ice time. I hope and expect Justin will be sent to GR. Perhaps risk sending May down, as well. No great loss if he's claimed.

Actually both Abs & Danger can go to GRG w/o passing through waivers. (Not the greatest scenario but whoever is sent down can come back up for the playoffs - no cap). I might put Lilja in the same category as Mule, if reasonably healthy maybe he should get a couple games in before the Olympics, maybe not. The Group of 3 (May, Leino, & Mebdeech) all have very little trade value, while only Leino has a possible high upside. Who would trade for them? Probably no-one. They would have to go through waivers and then maybe someone would pick them up for free (like we got Miller).

Try sending 1 & 1/2 of them through waivers(May & part of Mebdeech)and send ABs down to get really healthy.

All of this is based on the idea we make the playoff's.

I wrote a post this weekend and posted it today stating Lilja has not had headaches in forever, and Holland was likely covering up for the fact that they can't bring him back without getting rid of people for both roster space AND salary cap. My bet is he doesn't get cleared by medical until next season, at which point Mebdeech has left in the offseason.

They can fit him though. Since he's been on LTIR, along with Franzen, their cap hits are prorated. Lilja will cost Detroit around $700,000.

I'll run it down later tonight. I'm almost certain they will be able to fit him after maybe sending down Abdelkader and waiving one more player.

It's an interesting theory, because Detroit does love circumventing the cap -- but they'd never do it at the cost of winning games. Lilja's presence was sorely missed when Mebdeech and Janik were in the lineup together for 15 straight games.

Until Franzen comes back, this can easily be fixed by sending May to GR. After Franzen, I have no idea. Thank God that's Kenny's problem.

Kyle,

I Didn't know they prorated the cap hit due to LTIR. That changes it a bit. They still have to ditch cap with Franzen too, It is more a compound of the two coming back that really make it seem like a larger amount I guess. Depends on who they dump. most of our dump-able players are bargain bin prices.

Abby needs to go down. His scoring touch is not the same as it was last season and he needs to work on it in GR. We want Abby to be more than just a 3rd liner and he isn't going to do that playing 4th line minutes in Detroit.

Also I am sure you can get a team looking for Experience to bite on Lebda for a 4th round pick or something. Meech also looks like he has potential and someone might take a chance on him just based on the fact Detroit's management liked him more than Quincey. But than again, they suck.

Sorry for the tripple post but another question came to mind. Can and Will Lilja spend a few weeks in GR for conditioning? I am not quite sure on the rules for that.

I would like to see Abdelkader in Grand Rapids just because one of my friends from work is taking his son to a Griffins game as a birthday present, and it would be fun for him to see Abdelkader play.

I think that conditioning stints can be up to 14 days or thereabouts, and it has to be after a long injury and with the mutual consent of the player and the team ... so someone can't have a sore foot that causes him to miss two games and then be sent down for a three month conditioning stint. It's somewhere in the CBA, but I'm too tired to look for it. smilies/smiley.gif

Cut May. His job was supposed to protect players like Kronwall and Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Did he go after Laroque after the knee to Kronwall? NO! He only fake fights his friend from Dallas. Either fight or don't, but don't go WWE like.

If May decides to, I dunno, actually do his job then send Abdelkader down. Yes, he's been good but he won't develop into that 2nd line center he can if he only plays 4th line minutes. Send him down and let him work out his problems so he become a better offensive threat.

Why do we still have May? I'm sure there are better FA out there who can fight. Like Downey? Maybe? May's lack of willingness to protect his teammates is really annoying and completely frustrating. Even more then Leino's ability to cough the puck over every time he touches it.

I'm concerned regarding Lilja. You don't just get headaches for a year straight and then jump back onto the ice after 2 weeks without them. Last year was a career year for him but in past years he'd just been uhh. He's certainly better then Leech because he is big enough to actually move players from the crease and he can block shots but I guarantee he won't be the same after this. How could he be? He won't be in shape, he won't not hesitate before blocking a shot or getting physical with a forward. I think he should go the route of Fischer and move to coaching.

Can you believe that Fischer would be 29 this year? He was an amazing young D, he probably would have stepped into Schinder's role when he left, making it unnecessary to sign Rafalski. Amazingly sad to lose a talent like that so young. And I remember watching that game on TV and seeing him go down. It reminded me of Pronger's collapse at the Joe.

I wouldn't press Lilja to come back. Goodness knows how much we need him in place of Lebda.. But I think next year would be a better time. My projected lines when everyone is back:

Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Franzen
Bertuzzzi-Zetterberg-Cleary
Miller-Flippula-Williams
Draper-Helm-Eaves
Abdelkader

May is useless. Drop him or sent him to GR. He has really been a failed experiment.

Keith B: A defenseman for the Caps (either Pothier or Poti, I get them confused) had concussion headaches for a year, then went to some like "accupunture" specialist in NYC, and was back on the ice playing 1 month later

Yeah, I'd send May down if we find ourselves in a situation where someone has to go. If we end up losing him to another team, that's OK.

As much as I love Abdelkader being from Muskegon, watching him with the puck trying to score sometimes is like passing a car wreck, you dont want to look but you cant help it... Not to mention 7minutes of playing time per game isnt helping him. Bring him back closer to the end of the season and drop May if he hasn't picked it up.

Lilja is far from out of shape. He's been skating with the team for months, just nothing physical until today. Franzen knocked him around pretty good and there were no immediate ill effects. Give the guy a couple weeks to get his physicality and confidence back and theres no reason why he cant pick up where he left off last year.

Robert, I think Lilja can do some conditioning in GR. Detroit really hasn't done that with any of their long-term injuries.

Keith, he won't be the same, but it's a huge boost if he can be anything close. The stay-at-home penalty kill specialist is exactly what Detroit needs, and something they could go after for the deadline. If they know how effective Lilja can be, they might be able to save themselves a young player or draft pick.

Fischer would be crazy right now, right in his prime. But you have to consider they probably never make the Stuart trade if Fischer was still playing. Still, who knows what the team would look like?

Johnny, I understand being cautious, but what's the point in waiting if he wants to go and doctors say he can? He can really help this team.

Manthei, I agree. I think he belongs in the NHL, but some major minutes in Grand Rapids could really help him. He's definitely got some good offensive touch, he just needs some time to find it again. I'd love for him to be a Cleary-type player some day, and not just a 3rd/4th liner like they're kind of grooming him to be.

Guydank, I read about that this afternoon. I think it's awesome he just told Franzen to run him, sounds like he caught him pretty good. I think he can be close to the same player, just no more fighting, obviously.

I have been hearing talk of how these players returning are finally going to turn the Wings season around. This is incorrect thinking. The real reason the Wings are on the verge of not making the playoffs is not all the injuries. It it unperforming players like Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Osgood and the loss of Hossa and Hudler. I wouldn't expect much to change over the next month. We will be going into March fighting for that last playoff slot.

I more or less agree with you. I wouldn't be so blunt though -- fans are not flat out "incorrect" for saying it (very medical/scientific way of saying it, are you really a doctor?). I think it's about half and half -- but I do think that people aren't blaming Datsyuk and company enough.

However, Lidstrom has been sensational over the past ten games. Both in points and defensive mistakes (or lack thereof). Datsyuk has been for most of the same, but I still think he needs to play more games like tonight (clearly the best player on either team), which has been the case for most of the past ten games. Zetterberg I didn't notice as much tonight, which is unusual because he seemed to be rounding into form after his injury.

I fully expect it to change come March. It's not just injuries, it's significant injuries. Kronwall has missed two months. He's this team's best defenseman at times, arguably the #1 on more than half of the teams in this league. Franzen is the best scorer on more than half of the teams in the league. Holmstrom is the best in the league at what he does. Three huge components. The other guys hurt are hardly scrubs. When you consider how much more useful Lilja is than Lebda, and how much better Williams is on the PP than Stuart/Meech, and how much better he is in the lineup than May/Leino/Maltby, you've got a valid point.

The loss of Hossa (c'mon, they won the Cup without him), and Hudler (never really played more than 15-17 minutes regularly) are really overblown. The only difference is this team no longer has the talent to win games with key players out. I dare you to find me a team who would be doing better if they had comparable players out. Chicago is the closest I can come, picture if they had Hossa (Franzen), Byfuglien (Holmstrom), Keith (Kronwall), Ericsson (Hjalmarsson), Williams (Brouwer?) Toews (Zetterberg and then some), Cleary (Versteeg), etc., out for extended lengths of time. Most teams in the league aren't even talented enough to have fair comparisons based on value to compare to the impact of Detroit's injuries. Do another team, I dare you. It just can't be done. Chicago doesn't even have a Lilja (bottom pairing, rock solid d-man). Chicago would be in the cellar with that kind of loss.

That's my piece. Still, I'd love for Datsyuk to be reminding us why he was up for the Hart every night. Nights off just don't work when we have so many injuries. Overall, I'm really not too worried.
